Temnothorax ambiguus is a small, bright orange species of acorn ant. Colonies can be polygynous. Sister species to T. curvispinosus.

Species Info
General: Temnothorax ambiguus is a relaxed, small, easy species of acorn ant to keep. Their colonies stay relatively small and they are typically calm ants. In the wild they'd live in twigs and acorns and prey on small arthropods.
Diet: These ants have a decently wide diet, but accept some foods more than others. They enjoy any liquid sugars and small forms of protein, especially fruit flies and cricket legs.
Polygyny: Temnothorax ambiguus can be polygynous. This means multiple queens may cooperate in a single colony. This can increase the max colony size and growth speed of the colony.
Temperature: This species does not need to be heated, but would benefit from it in brood development. If you heat them, provide a heating gradient.
Diapause: Temnothorax ambiguus does not need to go into diapause. However, if the colony seems to slow down, or the keeper decides to take a break from them during the winter, they can endure a hibernation just like any other northern ant. During this hibernation, put the ants in a cooler area, such as a mini fridge, wine cooler, or unheated room which stays above freezing.
Growth: Brood development takes 4-8 weeks, usually around 5-6 weeks, depending on if they are heated and fed frequently or not.
